Adding and Multiplying Fractions

Hi Jamie,

I know that problems involving fractions are often very confusing for students. In this problem, you need to also remember to use the order of operations!

2/3 + 1/2 * 1/4

When using the order of operations, we would multiply 1/2 * 1/4 first.

1/2 * 1/4 = 1/8 (multiply the numerators and the denominators)

Now we'll add:
2/3 + 1/8

We must first find a least common denominator. The least common denominator for 3 and 8 is 24.

2/3 = 16/24
1/8 = 3/24

So, 16/24 + 3/24 = 19/24

Since 19/24 cannot be simplified, your final answer is 19/24.

Hope this helps!
