Algebra 1 question

by Kenny
(Virginia)

I formerly taught HS Accounting and Finance. Our local school system is looking for an 8th/9th grade Algebra teacher. I miss working with the students and am considering applying for the position. Could someone please tell me what math topics are covered in Algebra 1? I want to be sure that I know what I'm getting into.

Thank,

Kenny

Algebra 1 Question
by: Karin

Dear Kenny,

I understand how you would miss working with the students and I also know how scary it can be not knowing the curriculum!

If you take a look at the left hand side nav bar, you will see a list of units under Algebra 1. These are the exact units and lesson topics that I taught in Maryland when I taught a high school Algebra 1 course. The only other unit that is usually included in Algebra 1 is a statistics/probability unit.

I would recommend taking a look at or studying each of the lessons within each unit. This will give you an idea of how much you may need to review before teaching the course.

Each state has their own standards and assessments. Your students may be required pass a high school Algebra assessment before graduating from high school. This test is typically taken near the end of their Algebra 1 year. Therefore, that does add a little pressure for you and your students.

If you decide to take this position and find that you need extra help with the lessons, I offer e-courses that contain video instruction, practice problems, answer keys and even quizzes and chapter tests. Check the following page for a list of products: http://www.algebra-class.com/algebra-practice-worksheets.html

As you know, being an educator is a very rewarding career. I wish you the best of luck!

All the best,
Karin
