Algebra 1 , Solving Equations, Example 2

by Paul McNaull

Step 3 in your solution to example 2 indicates subtracting 5 from both sides of the equation. However the words state that the minus sign is an indication of value not operation. What is the method to know if a sign, + or -, is for value or operation?

Hi Paul,

On the following web page: http://www.algebra-class.com/one-step-equations.html

Example 2, step 3 shows that you subtract 5 from both sides because the opposite of addition is subtraction.

I know the sign looks like a negative instead of a minus, and I apologize. Formatting on the computer is nightmare.

In this problem, you are subtracting five from both sides. Just remember though, in other cases, subtracting five and adding negative five result in the same answer.
