My daughter hates math very much...she can't understand why there is a math in this world. She hates Algebra. How could she love math? Please help me. Thank you.

Dear Andrea,

Thank you for submitting your story to Algebra-class.com. I know many parents who feel the way you do. It's very difficult and frustrating when your child does not perform well in school and has a negative attitude towards a subject.

Most students who hate math have not done well in math for many years. This is most likely due to a gap in their learning in the elementary years.

Math concepts build on one another from unit to unit and from year to year. Therefore, if you don't understand a concept early on, then you will fall behind in the years to come.

You really can't make your child love math. We all have different strengths and weaknesses and I'm sure that your daughter has many strengths in other academic areas.

Although you can't help her to love math, you can help her to better understand math. By understanding the work, she will build more confidence and be more apt to want to complete her work.

I would suggest finding a tutor who is willing to assess her prior knowledge in order to identify her weakest skills. Then focus on those skills until you build up to Algebra concepts that utilize those skills. Your daughter will not be able to successfully move on in Math until she has a solid foundation of basic skills in Math.
