Linear Inequality

Hi Simeon,

Writing an inequality is very similar to writing an equation. You first want to identify your variable.

Our variable is the number of people.

Let x = the number of people who want to go to the park.

We know that the admission is $12 and parking is $5. Therefore, 5 is the constant (y-intercept) and $12 is the rate (this is the slope).

y = 12x + 5 would be the equation.

We know that we want to know how many people would be able to get in with only $50.

12x + 5 < 50 (The symbol is less than or equal)
--

So, the amount of admission times the number of people, plus the $5 parking fee is less than or equal to $50.

This is the inequality that represents this problem.

Hope this helps,
Karin
