How do you remember all the properties? I just can't figure out how to remember them. Example: distributive property.

Math Properties

This is a great question! It sounds as if you've been given a list of properties and asked to memorize or recite them. However, studying and using math is not like memorizing history facts.

Most of the properties that you are studying, you are most likely applying in your everyday math work. You will be utilizing them so often, that they will become second nature.

For example, you know that 3 + 5 = 8 and 5 + 3 = 8, right? You probably learned this when you were in 2nd or 3rd grade. Well this is actually classified as the commutative property. We all know that we can reverse the number in an addition problem and get the same answer, but very few actually refer to this as the commutative property.

So, I know the distributive property seems difficult as you enter Pre-Algebra, but you will be utilizing this property just as often - I promise!

You will know instantly that you need to apply the distributive property when you see parenthesis.

6(x + 3) is an example of the distributive property. Since we can't add x + 3, we need to simplify by multiplying both terms by 6. We are "distributing" the 6 to both terms inside the parenthesis.

Our answer would be: 6x + 18.

The more you practice and utilize the skills that more natural they will feel!

Best of luck to you,

Karin
