When you are adding negative and positive numbers, your sum depends on the actual numbers and the sign associated with each. It is better explained on the following web page:

If you are multiplying or dividing, it doesn't matter which number is larger. (This only matters if you are adding)

The rules for multiplying or dividing numbers are:

If the signs are the same (positive times positive or negative times negative), then the answer will always be positive.

If the signs are not the same (positive times negative or negative times positive), then the answer is always negative.
